Re-borked exhaust manifold
I thought the little Toyota was getting louder again. Sure enough, it looks like my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! didn’t hold. The JB Weld stuck fine, and held up to the heat, but it looks like the expansion/contraction just caused it to crack in the same place as the cast iron.
Well, it was worth a try... off to Rock Auto...

Use more JBWeld! /j
Been trying to fix a crack in Sully’s radiator. 3" crack in the plastic tank on top . Twice with JBWeld’s PlastiWeld. Nope. It doesn’t actually harden. Twice with increasing thicknesses of Raka Epoxy and Cabasil thickener. Nope, they blow out from 13psi + ~190F .
Next plan is to drill a hole in the side of the tank. Then get a ramrod to the back of the crack for a brush, acetone cleaner, and putty knife . Th en I can patch the hole from the filler tube.
Anyone got experience welding plastic? Or just go to the pick-a-part 50 miles away and get another one. It’s not about the money; I want to make the repair work, damnit!

Plastic welding is the easiest welding. Basically just a hot stick.

If it’s cast steel you can weld it.
Cast iron, you can try but not likely to be successful

It’s a $53 part at Rock Auto. I was just trying to be a cheapskate.

I mean if it’s steel it costs you a 6/12 pack if you know a guy. Who knows if the guy can keep it in-plane while he welds it up, though

I’ve looked at a few YT vids and most of them are about bumpers . They all identify the type of plastic before welding. I have no idea what this plastic is. Are you familiar with plastic welding? Suggestions? Are there generic welding vids? I can weld metal a little (call me a grinder, not a welder).

I have the harbor freight plastic welder and it works as expected, I have fixed a few broken trim pieces and fixed a bed cover for a Tacoma, never anything holding pressure but I think this would have worked fine on a rad tank. Clean it all out grind a little v into the crack and get the sides melty then add the plastic filler rod and get it to all melt together.

Thank you! I’ll give this a try. HF is close enough so we’ll go there Friday. The old farts here in the yard always like new places to get our Friday Feast. Now to gaggle bbq places in N JAX...

So, after replacing that one I commented about under your previous post, I once again found myself dealing with one of these manifolds just this past weekend! This time, it was helping my brother on his 1990 Corolla (4A-FE). Same part, apparently... Anyway, his manifold had just started to show the tiniest crack in that same spot, but he also had a bad front pipe , so it felt convenient to replace them both at the same time. But not before hitting it with a shot of bright orange high-heat paint!

Well, that adds like 5 horsepower right there, doesn’t it?

At least!
